5 Best Theoretical Balance Practices

Analytical balances are very fragile. Several factors, including the atmosphere in which they are mounted and how they are treated, can influence their accuracy.

  • Proper calibration

Regular calibration allows the scale to produce reliable and correct weights. It is necessary to calibrate the scale at the place where it is to be used. If you do need to move the scale, you’ll need to calibrate it as well.

  • Select the right setting

Factors such as humidity, temperature and air pressure can influence the accuracy of the analytical scale. Ideally, the scale will be set where all of these variables remain stable.

To avoid fluctuations in readings, keep the balances in a vibration-free position. You should use a vibration-absorbing table for measuring. These scales are best positioned out of direct sunlight and away from HVAC vents as temperature and airflow can influence the measure.

  • Minimize Sample – Caused Errors

In order to get a precise weight by using a scale, it is necessary to treat each sample properly. Non-conductive sample trays such as glass or plastic can bear an electrostatic charge. This could have an effect on the weighing results. This can be reduced by using an ionizer that can neutralize the electrostatic charge.

Ensure that the samples are at room temperature to prevent air currents inside the enclosure. Often, hygroscopic materials can be measured easily with balancing doors closed to prevent moisture absorption.

Placing the sample at the middle of the scale can help to obtain more precise measurements. And, make sure that the scale is capable of measuring the necessary increments.

  • Avoid Touch or Disruption

Also fingerprints can influence the weight of the container until it has been tarnished. The body oil on your fingers can add mass and contribute to incorrect reading. You should use pan holders or gloves to prevent this when handling test weights and position the sample on the scale using tweezers.

  • Keep the scales clean

To deter soil or dust from impacting the scale, it is useful to keep the scale clean. Stop using aggressive cleaning agents such as solvents. Usually, a wet cloth and a gentle soap would be enough to disinfect the scale, ensuring that the resulting liquid does not leak onto the scale. If loose samples are trapped in the scales, use a soft brush to clean them. If the balance is unplugged during the cleaning process, allow it to warm up before using it again.
